How to Become a Practicing Clinical Psychologist in Oklahoma

Becoming a practicing clinical psychologist in Oklahoma begins by obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree. This degree does not need to be in psychology, but if it isn’t, there may be some necessary prerequisite classes that you need to take before becoming a psychologist.

Either a Doctor of Psychology or a Doctor of Philosophy degree is required to become a practicing psychologist. The education necessary to become a clinical psychologist will often require up to ten years to complete. There may be some special requirements to complete for those with a Doctor of Philosophy rather than a Doctor of Psychology.

Once the educational requirements have been completed, you will need to be licensed by the board. Licensing requires the submission of an application form, which costs $400 and requires two passport photos. This application form has to be completed after completing the board’s requirements, however, which are substantial.

To start, getting your license requires at least two years of experience while under supervision. You must get 2,000 hours of experience, with at least three licensed psychologists, over more than a single calendar year. During these 2,000 hours of experience, at least 75 of those hours must be doing hands-on work with patients.

It is ideal to undergo some of these years of supervision while still attending school. In doing so, you can fulfill both objectives concurrently and make it faster and easier to get your license. Getting an internship is a way that credit hours may be acquired while still going to school.

Once those hours have been completed, you need to pass your licensing exams. This exam is called the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology. There are test exams available for those who want to study a similar test. A score of 500 or better must be achieved in order to pass.

Finally, once the educational requirements, training requirements, and test requirements have all been fulfilled, you will need to get three letters of reference to file with your application. Once you’ve collected all of these documents, your application can be submitted in full to the board. If the application is accepted, your license will be sent to you.

From start to finish, the process of becoming a clinical psychologist in Oklahoma can take from 8 to 10 years. However, those who already have a Bachelor’s Degree may be able to acquire a PsyD and get their training completed within three to four years, depending on how quickly their supervision is established.
