How to Become a Practicing Clinical Psychologist in Oregon

Oregon has specific requirements to practice psychology there, just like other states. To get started on that path, the first thing you’ll want to do will be to pursue a bachelor’s degree. There are associate degrees and certificates available in the mental health field, too, but they aren’t going to give you the education you need. A bachelor’s degree will still be a requirement, and it should either be in psychology or in a related field.

During the time that you’re pursuing your bachelor’s degree in Oregon, look around for any opportunities you have to get research experience through your university. Many undergraduate students work as research assistants to psychology professors. That way they get a lot of valuable work experience at the same time as their education.

After you get a bachelor’s degree, you’ll go on for your master’s in psychology. The programs above can help you, but there are others, as well. Pick the option that’s right for you. Once you get your master’s degree, it will be time to earn to PsyD. This generally takes four or five years, and that time includes the internship that will be required.

Graduation day will come, and then it will be time to look at getting licensed in Oregon as a psychologist. Following the proper steps are important, and these are:

Getting your fingerprints taken. It’s not difficult to do, but it’s the first step in getting licensed. You’ll need to go online to the Fieldprint Oregon website, and set up an appointment at an available location, date, and time that works for you. You will be fingerprinted at that time and those prints will be sent off for a background check.
Submitting an application to the Board. The Board won’t know you’re trying to get licensed until you apply. There are supporting documents that will have to be submitted, as well, since you must prove you have the proper education and must meet other requirements. Once you apply, you can track your application status online for your convenience.
Gaining one year of SPE. You have to have a year of post-doctoral, supervised experience in order to receive a license in the state of Oregon. That includes at least 1,500 hours of documented supervision, along with other specifics. Make sure you don’t start these hours until after you get your doctorate, or they won’t count. Also be sure the person who is supervising you qualifies to do so under Oregon law. If they don’t it won’t help your hours, and you could even receive sanctions from the Board for not doing things the right way.
Passing the psychology exams. The last step before you can get your license is to pass the exams the State of Oregon requires in order to be licensed to practice psychology. There is both a professional practice exam and a jurisprudence exam, and you must pass both to qualify. You must send in a written request to take these exams, along with the testing fee.
